Privacy Policy — Sail Planner

Sail Planner is a recreational sailing route planner. You draw waypoints on a nautical chart and preview the wind, waves, pressure and temperature forecast along the way. This policy explains exactly what data the app and website process, and what they do not.

Data stored on your device

Your saved routes, app settings (such as language and light/dark theme) and last map position are stored only in your browser/app local storage on your device. We cannot read this data. It is never uploaded, and you can clear it at any time by removing the routes in the app or clearing the app's data.

Forecast requests (data sent to our service)

To fetch a forecast, the app sends the coordinates (latitude/longitude) and estimated arrival times of the points along your planned route to our weather service. Our service forwards those coordinates to Open-Meteo to retrieve the forecast, caches the weather result by location for a few hours, and returns it to your device.

• These are the coordinates of the route you draw, which need not be your own location.
• The coordinates are not linked to you, not used to build a profile, and not stored beyond the short-lived forecast cache.
• As with any internet request, your device's IP address is transmitted to our hosting provider and may be processed transiently in standard server logs for security and operation. We do not use it to identify you.

Device location

The app requests your device location only when you tap the "locate me" button, and uses it solely to centre the map on your position. This location is processed on your device and is never stored or transmitted to us or any third party. You can decline or revoke the location permission at any time in your device settings; the rest of the app keeps working.

Map and chart data

The chart is rendered from third-party map tiles — OpenStreetMap base tiles and OpenSeaMap seamark overlays. When tiles load, your device contacts those providers directly, which necessarily exposes your IP address and the map area you are viewing to them. Their use of that data is governed by their own privacy policies.

Third parties we use

• Open-Meteo — weather and marine forecast provider (receives route coordinates via our service).
• OpenStreetMap & OpenSeaMap — map tile providers (contacted directly by your device).
• Amazon Web Services (AWS), region eu-central-1 (Frankfurt, Germany) — hosts our website and weather service.

We do not sell or share your personal data, and we do not use it for advertising.

What we do not do

• No user accounts or sign-in.
• No advertising or ad networks.
• No analytics, tracking, or tracking cookies.
• No selling or sharing of personal data with data brokers.

Data retention

On-device data persists until you delete it. Forecast results are cached by our service only briefly (a few hours) and are keyed by location, not by user. Operational server logs are retained only as long as needed for security and operation, then deleted.

Children

Sail Planner is a general-audience planning tool and is not directed to children. It does not knowingly collect personal data from children.

Your rights

As we are based in Germany, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies. To the extent we process any personal data relating to you, you have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and data portability, and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Because the app holds no account and stores your route data only on your device, most data is under your direct control. For any request, contact us at info@kc-sd.de.

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new "last updated" date.
